What is Groupanda's group chat?

Groupanda is a group chat app for communities. Members talk in real time, in channels and in direct messages. You decide how people join and who can post in each channel, and your admins keep things in check.

  • Runs on web, iOS and Android
  • Only members can see the conversations
  • Free to use, with no member limit

How do channels keep a group chat organized?

Each channel covers one topic, so conversations don't get mixed up. As the group grows, you can add, rename and reorder channels. There's no limit on how many you can have.

Before you post, include the trail name, the date and anything people should know, like a closure or a washed-out section.

Did the ridge trail on Sunday. There's a tree down past the second switchback, but you can get around it on the left.

Good to know. How muddy was it heading down to the creek?

Ankle deep in places. Bring gaiters if you have them.

  • Every new group starts with General, Announcements and three topic channels.

  • By default, only the owner can post in Announcements, so news doesn't get buried.

  • Choose who can post in each channel: the owner, the owner and admins, or everyone.

  • You and your admins can pin important messages, and each channel collects them in its Pinned tab.

How do members reply, react to messages and mention each other?

Messages in each channel show up in the order they were sent, with no ads and no feed picking what people see.

  • Reply in a thread to keep the main channel uncluttered. Below the original message, you'll see how many replies it has and when the last one came in.
  • Reply with a quote: your reply shows a snippet of the original message, and tapping the snippet takes you straight to it.
  • React to a message with an emoji.
  • Use @ to mention a member and # to reference a channel.
  • Message another member one-on-one. Read receipts appear only in direct messages.

Can members share photos, documents and voice messages?

Yes, both in channels and in direct messages. Links get a preview too.

  • Up to 10 photos per message
  • Documents up to 10 MB
  • Voice messages up to 2 minutes long, in the apps and in the browser
  • Tabs for Photos, Docs, Links and Voice in every channel

Who can join, and who can see the conversations?

Only members can see the conversations: the channel list, messages and files. There are three ways people can join:

  • Open: the group shows up in Groupanda search, and people can join without approval.
  • Invite only: the group doesn't show up in search, and anyone with the invite link can join.
  • Approval required: the invite link sends a join request, and you or an admin can approve or reject it.
  • Each group has one invite link, and only you can see and copy it.

Who runs the group chat, and how does moderation work?

Every group has one owner, plus admins and members. The owner sets up the group and picks the admins, who moderate every channel.

  • Admins can ban or mute members and delete messages.
  • Muted members can still read, but can't post or react.
  • Banning someone ends their membership right away and keeps them from rejoining.
  • Members can report messages to Groupanda and block other users.

Which devices does the group chat app work on?

Groupanda works in your browser at app.groupanda.com, and there are apps for iPhone, iPad and Android.

  • Push notifications on iOS, Android and the web
  • Each member chooses, channel by channel: all messages, mentions only, or muted
  • Quiet hours you can turn on in settings
  • Interface in 8 languages, with light and dark mode

How much does Groupanda cost?

Common questions about Groupanda group chat

What app is best for group chats?

The best app for group chats depends on the group. For a few friends or a family, the messaging app they already use is often all they need. A larger community with lots of topics is better served by channels, roles and moderation. Groupanda is a group chat app built for exactly that, and it runs on web, iOS and Android.

Is Groupanda a free group chat app?

Yes, Groupanda is free to use, with no member limit and no time limit. Creating a group costs nothing, and there's no monthly or per-member fee. Fees apply only when members of a group buy one of its paid plans.

Can you search message history in Groupanda?

Yes. Groupanda has searchable message history across the whole group. One search covers messages in every channel you can read, including thread replies, plus channels and members. You can narrow it to one channel, and in a direct message you search just that conversation. Type at least 2 characters to search. Groupanda doesn't delete messages or files on a schedule.

Can members send voice messages in Groupanda?

Yes. Members of a Groupanda group can send voice messages up to 2 minutes long, in channels and direct messages. It works on web, iOS and Android.

Who can see the conversations in a Groupanda group?

Only members of a Groupanda group can see its conversations: the channel list, messages and files. Open groups appear in Groupanda search with their name, image and description. Invite-only groups and groups that require approval don't appear there.
